The Mazda2 is a subcompact/supermini/B-segment pocket-sized motorcar manufactured and marketed globally by Mazda since 2002, currently in its third generation. The Mazda2 has too been marketed as the Mazda Demio (a name it kept in the Japanese market until 2019), while its directly predecessor was exported equally the Mazda 121.

The second-generation Mazda2 earned the 2008 Earth Car of the Yr title,[1] while the third-generation model was awarded the 2014–2015 "Japanese Car of the Year".[2]

The third-generation model was sold in North America as the Scion iA and Toyota Yaris, Yaris iA and Yaris R.

The other, petrol-hybrid version based on the XP210 Yaris Hybrid has been sold in Europe since 2022.[3] [4]

Predecessor [edit]

When it came to redesigning the Revue, Mazda came upward with a alpine hatchback, minivan-esque package. Introduced in a time full of negative printing coverage, the Demio became a surprise hitting for Mazda in Nippon, and as well foreshadowed the current ingather of B-segment minivans such as the Opel Meriva, Fiat Idea and the Renault Modus. Sold as the 121 in nigh export markets, the DW'due south replacement was called the Mazda2 in most of the world. The Demio nameplate, however, continued to exist used in Japan until 2019.

The original Demio was introduced in July 1996 and replaced in 2002.

Interior

The Demio was redesigned in 2002. The Demio proper name continued in Japan, while the residuum of the world dropped 121 and other names in favor of Mazda2. Since its debut, the 2 has been well received by the market, pushing its Japanese domestic auction to as loftier as seventh place.

The badge-engineered Ford version, the Ford Fusion, is no longer made, as Ford began importing the Ford Fiesta on the global Ford B3 platform.[6] Product of the car for European market started at Almussafes Ford establish in Valencia, Spain on 20 January 2003.[7]

All Demios come up with ABS and EBD, and stability control is optional. An innovative characteristic offered in Japan is east-4WD, a hybrid automobile-type system which uses an electrical motor to power the rear wheels of this forepart cycle drive vehicle when needed. In the Demio, this organization is used but equally a traction aid, non for increased fuel economy as in virtually other vehicles.

In that location is also a big divergence in flooring pan and pedal box. The European-sectional version of Mazda2 (DY) uses a pedal box straight sourced from Ford Fiesta rather than their own 4x108 bolt design instead of 4x100.

Iii trim levels were bachelor in Japan, Cozy, Sport, and Casual.

In Europe, trim levels were S, TS and TS2. The TS and TS2 were renamed Antares and Capella in 2004. The Japanese 1.3 and ane.5 gasoline engines are not bachelor, but Ford'southward one.25-liter xvi-valve Sigma engine is used, and Mazda'south 1.4 and 1.half dozen gasoline, plus Fords one.4 TDCi diesel fuel are offered merely called 1.4 CDTi by Mazda. (Virtually all the engine parts are interchangeable with the i.4 diesel version of the Ford Fiesta and Ford Fusion of the aforementioned period).

In New Zealand the Mazda2 was sold with a 1.5 ZY-VE directly-4 engine

The Mazda2 is sold with a variety of Z-family unit engines:

Reports of a new generation of the Mazda2/Demio emerged in 2013[56] for a 2014 launch, with some manufacturing at the new Mazda institute in Mexico.[55] [57] The Mazda Hazumi Concept model (designed to preview the future Mazda2 models) was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Evidence[58] and in Apr 2014 the development mule of the new generation Demio was undergoing testing in Germany, covered in cover-up.[59] [60] [61]

In July 2014, Mazda presented photos of the tertiary generation Mazda2 hatchback,[62] and production began at Mazda's Hōfu establish.[63] Sales in Japan began in September 2014. The sedan version debuted at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2014.[64] [65]

The third generation is based on a shortened variation of Mazda'south CX-five platform[66] and features greater length, wider front and rear tracks, decreased interior room for rear-seat occupants and less front head and legroom.[67]

In 2014, the Mazda de México Vehicle Functioning (MMVO) factory in Salamanca, Guanajuato began production of the Mazda2 for diverse North and South American markets.[68]

In Oct 2014, the Demio was awarded the 2014–2015 "Car of the Twelvemonth" past the Nippon Car of the Yr Committee.[2]

Despite the Mazda2 beingness produced in North America, at the new Mexico plant, Mazda announced that information technology would not sell the vehicle in Canada or the United states (except in Puerto Rico). Instead, the Mazda2 would be sold by Toyota Motor North America in those markets betwixt 2016 and 2020 (run across department below).[69] [lxx]

The Demio nameplate was discontinued in all remaining markets in September 2019, and replaced by the Mazda2 moniker worldwide.[71]

Hatchback (DJ; facelift)

Interior

The third-generation received a facelift for the 2020 model year with diverse outside changes, interior trim changes, revised intermission tuning to ameliorate ride quality, improvements to the engine deceleration free energy recovery system, adaptive headlights, and standard 1000-Vectoring Control Plus.[71] With Toyota discontinuing its marketing of the Mazda2, the vehicle finally went on sale in United mexican states, where it is produced. The facelift model went on sale in Mexico in October 2019 for the 2020 model twelvemonth. It comes in three versions: i, i Touring, and i Grand Touring with automatic transmission.[72]

Engines and transmission [edit]

The Mazda2 uses Mazda's Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic and Skyactiv-MT v- and half dozen-speed manual gearboxes[73] equally well as finish-start technology ("i-Stop" turns the engine off when the auto is stationary) and a brake energy regeneration system ("i-ELOOP" uses braking to accuse a capacitor for all car electronics, in place of an alternator charging a battery).[73]

The Mazda2 is initially offered with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a 1.v-liter diesel engine—the Skyactiv-D, 1.five-liter diesel engine debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.[58] The gasoline engine will be available with 74 bhp, 89 bhp or 113 bhp, while the diesel will produce 104 bhp. The diesel engine was discontinued in Europe in 2019 and received an boosted 1.5-liter mild hybrid gasoline engine in 2020. The later is but available with vi-speed transmission transmission.

While the Mazda2 is produced in Due north America at Mazda'southward plant in United mexican states, the company did not sell the vehicle in Canada or the U.s.a. (except in Puerto Rico). Instead, the Mazda2 was sold by Toyota Motor N America in those markets between 2016 and 2020.[69] [seventy] The rebadged Mazdas received unlike model codes starting with DA, DB, or DD.

In Canada, the vehicle was sold as the Yaris Sedan across all model years.[74] Mazda initially appear at the 2015 Montreal International Auto Show that it would offering the Mazda2 in the marketplace, but canceled the rollout on 16 November 2015, and shifted the rollout to Toyota.

In Mexico, the vehicle was sold as the Yaris R, aslope the more austere and lower-priced Yaris Sedán (a variant of the Vios and later on the Yaris ATIV). The Yaris R sold in three versions.[75]

In the United States, the sedan was sold nether several names. In the initial 2016 model twelvemonth, it was marketed under Toyota'southward youth-oriented Scion make as the Scion iA, where it was the only 4-door sedan and only model not to exist built in Nippon to be marketed under the brand. After discontinuing the Scion make, the car was rebranded as the Toyota Yaris iA for the 2017 and 2018 model years.[76] For the 2019 and 2020 model years, the sedan was rebranded again as the Toyota Yaris Sedan.[77]

When first introduced, like all Scion vehicles, the iA just had one trim level (monospec) and just offered buyers a choice of exterior color and a choice between 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.[78] For 2019, with the Yaris Sedan rebranding, the vehicle received a minor facelift, and L, LE and XLE trim levels were introduced with a diverseness of interior and outside options.[79]

The hatchback variant of the Mazda2 was not initially sold by Toyota, which instead offered a Yaris Liftback based on the Toyota Vitz (XP130). When the Vitz was discontinued, Toyota announced at the 2019 New York International Machine Prove that a model called the Yaris Hatchback, based on the Mazda2, would proceed sale in 2019 for the 2020 model yr.[80] [81]

Exports of both the sedan and hatchback to the Usa were stopped in June 2020 due to new regulations and slow sales.[82] In July, Toyota Canada also confirmed the cancellation in the Canadian market.[83] The Mazda2 based Yaris was also discontinued in United mexican states on August 27, 2020, leaving only the Thai-imported XP150 serial Yaris and Yaris Sedán as its indirect replacements.[84]
