Let's be honest: no BBQ is quite complete without a juicy burger (complete with the obligatory brioche bun and ketchup), so we've fired up the grills and enrolled a panel of testers to sample a selection in search of the stars for 2022.
Whether you like yours topped with a classic cheese slice or layered with little gem lettuce, gherkins and tomato, it's important to start with the tastiest burger you can get your hands on. From budget-friendly crowd-pleasers to decadent steak and bone marrow patties, these are the best burgers from supermarkets and online butchers.
Looking for a plant-based alternative? You can also find our top-rated vegan and best vegetarian burgers, as well as vegan sausages for a plant-based feast.
How long do burgers take on the BBQ?
Once you've made sure your grill is piping hot (around 71 celsius is best), cook the beef burger for 6-7 minutes on each side for medium, or 8-9 minutes if your preference is well done. You'll want to cook the meat on a high heat to sear the outside, while keeping a very slight pinkness on the middle. For other varieties such as lamb or vegan options, please follow the instructions on the packaging.
How we test
Our panel of 10 BBQ taste testers grilled, flipped and devoured 29 burgers, so you know the ones worth stocking up on this summer. They were looking for a generously sized patty, with a rich, flavoursome taste and oh-so juicy texture.
We've also tested the best flavoured burgers for 2022 if you fancy a twist on tradition – truffle and parmesan patty, anyone?
BEST BEEF BURGER
ASDA Extra Special Ultimate Salt and Pepper British Beef Burger, 2pk
Score: 77/100
Our winning beef burger is packed with bold, umami flavours and perfectly seasoned with simple salt and cracked black pepper. A certified crowd-pleaser for all the family; all that's left for you to do is pile inside a brioche bun and top as you please.
JOINT RUNNER-UP BEEF BURGER
Farmison Hand Pressed Steak & Bone Marrow Burger, 4pk
Score: 76/100
Combining steak and bone marrow, this burger is undeniably luxurious. The aroma is authentically grassy (a tell-tale sign of well-reared beef), while the flavour is deliciously meaty and complex.
At £10.95 for four, this was the most premium burger on test, but testers felt the high quality justified the higher price tag.
JOINT RUNNER-UP BEEF BURGER
Aldi Wagyu Burger, 2pk
Score: 76/100
These British wagyu burgers are a steal at £3.29. They're full of flavour and just the right thickness, meaning you can achieve a quality BBQ sear, while retaining all the succulence and moisture of the meat.
In-store only
BEST BUDGET BEEF BURGER
Tesco Finest Brisket & Chuck Burger, 2pk
Score: 75/100
Make sure you add this tasty two-pack to your basket while doing your regular Tesco shop. Our panel was initially impressed with the "juicy" appearance and finely ground texture, with high praise for the light caramelisation and charred smoky flavour, though some felt they were lacking a little oomph.
What these patties lack in size, they certainly make up for in flavour, with a mouth-watering umami aroma, generous seasoning and a rich caramelised onion flavour. Despite being thinner than other burgers on test, the meat itself was succulent and deliciously juicy.
RUNNER-UP BEST BUDGET BEEF BURGER
Morrisons The Best 14 Day Aged Beef Burger, 2pk
Score: 74/100
You're going to need a rather large bun for this generously juicy burger. Made with cuts of 14-day dry aged steak, Morrisons' entry won our panel over with its "deep and complex" aroma, deliciously caramelised flavour and satisfying texture.
At £1.50 per patty, these are a sure-fire hit for a BBQ feast on a budget.
BEST PASTURE-RAISED BEEF BURGER
Abel & Cole Organic Beef Burgers, 2pk
Score: 73/100
As well as being certified organic, Abel & Cole's latest 'Green Butcher Range' is 100% grass-fed and pasture raised – how's that for top quality?
In terms of flavour, it reminded our panel of a steak burger, with unctuous fat pockets and a hit of black pepper seasoning. The texture wasn't for everyone, though, with some testers finding it too chunky for their liking.
These Aberdeen Angus beef burgers are simply seasoned with dried onion, salt and black pepper, making them a safe bet when it comes to pleasing milder palates. Though a classic combination of flavours, the overall product is slightly muted, and some testers felt they were a touch dry.
BEST AROMA
Waitrose No 1 Dry Aged Hereford Steak Burger, 2pk
Score: 72/100
Made from grass and forage-fed Hereford British beef, then seasoned with pink Himalayan salt, these burgers have a very rich and meaty aroma, almost like a quality beef stock. On tasting, however, some testers found the flavour too mild and the meat a little chewy.
M&S British Wagyu Beef Burgers, £4.50 for 2, 70/100
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference British Beef Steak Burgers, £2.75 for 2, 70/100
Eversfield Organic Beef Steak Burgers, £6.95 for 4, 70/100
Looking for a twist on tradition? These are our top-rated flavoured burgers for 2022...
BEST FLAVOURED BEEF BURGER
ASDA Extra Special British Beef Burger with Truffle and Parmesan Melt, 2pk
Score: 86/100
You either love or loathe truffle, but our panel couldn't get enough of this succulent beef burger topped with a decadent black truffle and parmesan cheese melt.
Oh-so indulgent, the cheese topping is almost Bechamel-like in flavour, while chives add piquancy and freshness.
RUNNER-UP FLAVOURED BEEF BURGER
M&S Chilli Cheese Beef Burger, 2pk
Score: 81/100
M&S is on to a winner with this fiery combo of British beef, mature cheddar and red jalapenos.
On grilling, the cheese creates molten pockets of oozing, tangy cheddar in every bite – need we say more? So good, in fact, that our panel couldn't resist polishing off the lot.
Available in-store now, launching online via Ocado soon
Another truffle-infused beef burger to impress our panel, this time from Waitrose & Partners. On grilling, these patties filled the test kitchen with an irresistible beef and black truffle aroma and they certainly didn't disappoint when it came to taste.
Packed with umami flavour and a lighter parmesan note, these were one of the most tender burgers on test.
Available in-store and online from 11th May
BEST FROZEN FLAVOURED BURGER
Iceland TGI's Chargrilled American Style Flatties, 2pk
Score: 77/100
Keep this pack of cook-from-frozen burgers on standby for last-minute, sunshine-soaked afternoons. The smoked flavour hits every high note (with some testers likening it to the same chargrilled flavour to a Burger King whopper), though we do suggest cooking for slightly less time than recommended to avoid drying out the meat.
BEST LAMB BURGER
Daylesford Lamb Burgers, 4pk
Score: 77/100
At £9 for 4, these luxurious lamb burgers deserve pride of place on your BBQ spread. The full-on aroma hints at the quality of the grass-fed lamb mince, while the peppermint seasoning is well-integrated and balanced.
Delicious with a dollop of sweet mint jelly, potatoes and a simple summer salad.
BEST BUDGET FLAVOURED BURGER
Aldi The Mighty Burger, 2pk
Score: 75/100
Aldi has all your BBQ bases covered this year without breaking the bank, and these budget burgers are certainly no exception.
Our testers followed the cooking instructions to a tee and were impressed with the nicely browned, BBQ char achieved, not to mention the juicy texture and complex flavours at play. Delicious.
Available in-store only
